Care Navigators from Haringey GP Federation’s Diabetes Service have started a busy programme of community engagement for 2022.

It’s all part of a concerted drive to build connections with local community organisations which work with Haringey residents, especially vulnerable, ethnic minority communities and those who are disproportionately affected by long term conditions like diabetes.

Diabetes Team Meets Turkish Kurdish and Cypriot Women’s Welfare Group

The team’s first event was a visit to the Islington Turkish Kurdish and Cypriot Women’s Welfare Group on March 24th following an invitation from the Camden and Islington Public Health Strategist.

The Haringey team met with the Group to deliver a diabetes health seminar to raise awareness of the condition and share tips on how to manage it. Their presentation was warmly received and there were many questions from the Group, some of whom are already managing diabetes. All participants reported that they felt more informed about healthy lifestyles and diabetes self-management as a result of the session.

Heval Alpsen, Senior Care Navigator for Haringey GP Federation said, “This session with ITKCWWG provided an ideal opportunity to actively reach out to residents who are more affected by diabetes than the general population. It was a pleasure to meet them and to be able to talk to them about diabetes self-management”.

Kawsar Ahmed, Care Navigator for the Diabetes Service added, “The positive response we received at this meeting shows how there is a real demand among local communities for health-related information and support. I’m looking forward to meeting more of our residents at similar sessions in the future”.

The team now intends to follow up with more diabetes health talks in community centres and groups across Haringey in coming months.
